When a vCIO makes sense

Consider a vCIO when you need board-level IT governance, roadmap ownership, vendor management, or compliance leadership but don’t need (or can’t justify) a full-time C-level IT hire. Mid-market and growth-stage organisations often benefit most.

What to expect

A good vCIO delivers: a costed roadmap, regular stakeholder alignment (e.g. QBRs), risk and compliance oversight, and coordination with your support and project teams. They should act as your lead IT authority, not an occasional consultant.

How to evaluate providers

Look for a structured methodology (e.g. discovery → strategy → engagement → risk → leadership), evidence of continuity (same team, not high turnover), and transparency. You should see how decisions are made and how performance is measured.
